Sitges is renowned internationally for its celebration of Corpus Christi. A deeply rooted tradition, a great number of its village streets are carpeted with intricate
designs made of flower petals. Anybody is welcome to join in to help create these carpets provided the polite instructions given by neighbours are followed as there are prestigious prizes to be won for the best streets. The Carnation and Bonsai Displays are also held over Corpus, as is the contest for the façade with the best floral decoration. In the Palau Maricel, l’ou com balla (the dancing egg) is placed on top of the water spout of the courtyard fountain and the egg begins to turn without falling, and thus "dances." The gegants (tall figures with painted papier mâché head and arms, and a hollow wooden frame covered in clothing) are brought out to head the procession of the Blessed Sacrament and the floral offering to our Lady of Vinyet.
